Tuning & Maintenance
TUNING
Most pipe organs benefit from two tunings per year:
- During the fall & winter seasons when the heat is on
- During the spring & summer when the air conditioning is running
We recommend waiting two weeks after the change of seasons before scheduling a tuning appointment.

The temperature of the room where the organ is located is an integral component to a successful tuning. Before each tuning, we require the space to be prepared to the same temperature as previous tunings or the temperature that is used for services and recitals. This detail allows the instrument the necessary time to acclimate to the temperature at which the organ is most commonly played.
Since each instrument has a different design, we use a combination of tuning by ear and using a highly-sensitive strobe meter. This allows us to do quick and careful adjustments, and reduces the overall impact on the instrument during tuning. In an effort to save you from unnecessary maintenance, we will also communicate when conditions make it inadvisable to tune the instrument.
MAINTENANCE
Throughout the year, we prioritize service visits to ensure our clients’ organs are in excellent working condition. Maintenance visits may include services such as:
- Diagnosing issues related to seasonal shifts affecting the instrument
- Addressing ciphers (pipes sound without being played)
- Fixing dead notes
- Covering organs prior to large construction projects

For larger maintenance concerns, our technicians will evaluate your instrument to assess the scope of the project. We will follow-up with a quote and description of the recommended work. Large-scale service projects may include:
- A full cleaning of the organ (recommended every 20 – 30 years)
- Re-pitching or resetting a temperament
- On-site patchwork for reservoirs and pneumatic actions
- Organ relocation
